As most people know by now Jake was taken from us very unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon. Beth wrote a very eloquent obituary and I don't think there's much I can add except that every time I read it I want to cry again. But I did dig out this photo, a crop of which is currently my avatar all over the place. It was taken by Beth on 5th May and I do like it: one man and his dog.

One of the pillars of Cow Bridge over Swaffham Bulbeck Lode seen on a walk today around Bottisham Fen. The other pillar has the date 1927 in the same gorgeous block font which is presumably the year Newmarket Rural District Council built the bridge. Nice to see that someone has made the effort to repaint it, it looked very tired back in November 2007.

This is the old
coprolite workings on Quy Fen. Last winter this lake was full to overflowing. Last Sunday it was so low that the depth gauge in the foreground is now entirely out of the water. We need some rain. A lot of it.

On our walk this afternoon while I was taking this photo of Beth with my Nokia 6760 phone Beth was taking a rather better one of me with her Nikon D60.
Although she did clever post processing with hers when we got home: the clouds were good, but they weren't that good.
