Favourite Supermarket?

»

Cambridge News' web site has a daily poll and their latest question is "What is our Favourite Supermarket?". They offered eight possibilities: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Co-op, Aldi, Marks and Spencer, and Waitrose.

So what was the result after 760 people had voted? Well bearing in mind the Cambridge is Tesco's town, with three big stores around the town, an even bigger one out at Bar Hill plus a host of small stores around the town and in the surrounding villages Tesco was inevitably going to be first surely. And so it turned out. But they only got 32.1%.

So who was second? My guess would have been Sainsbury's (who have a big store on the outskirts of town and another small one in the city centre), Asda (big store in Cambridge) or perhaps Morrisons (big store at Cambourne).

Nope, none of those. It was Waitrose with 19.2%. They're got just one store on the south side of town and it's not even that big. But people who shop their clearly like it. Here's all the scores in order:

Tesco32.1%
Waitrose19.2%
Sainsbury's14.9%
Morrisons10.1%
Asda8.3%
Marks and Spencer6.7%
Aldi5.3%
Co-op3.4%

Now there's lots of problems with this of course. Most significant of all it's a self selecting sample. We've no idea what their demographics are and it's not normalised in any way.

But what would be fascinating is to know where these people actually routinely shop. My suspicion, given the distribution of stores around here is that a lot of those voting for Waitrose actually do their routine shopping at Tesco ... but that's not who they're voting for.
